Submitted by Mike Grenville on Wed, 11 Feb 2004 21:24

ABC News has launched a premium SMS news alert service in the USA using Telenor Mobile Interactive for the premium rate service

The first carriers to roll the news alert service in the United States are AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile with others such as Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, Nextel, Alltel following soon after.

“These alerts help mobile consumers stay current with developments in the biggest news stories of the day, from the war on terrorism to the campaign trail to the Martha Stewart trial,” said Bernard Gershon, Senior Vice President/General Manager, ABC News Digital.

The service costs $1.99 per month per service, plus the standard text messaging costs. In a simple two-step registration process, subscribers either text “NEWS” to the short code 4300 to receive breaking news alerts, or they can text “POL” to the same short code 4300 to receive political alerts.
