MMS: Hipix shrinks MMS, retains image quality

Submitted by Sandra Vogel on Mon, 12 Jul 2010 15:31

Human Monitoring Limited has announced it is entering a strategic partnership with Korean mobile solutions provider Innoace to develop mobile applications that will enable 8 megapixel MMS images to be delivered across mobile networks using less than 300KB of data.

The technology uses the existing h.264 codec to achieve twice to five times more effective still image compression compared to JPEG images on mobile handsets.

The development opens up the possibility for phone users to shoot photos to the full image capacity of their handset and MMS them to a recipient. The technology behind hipix shrinks the file but does not alter the resolution, so that the recipient can see the full megapixel image rather than a cut down version of it.
