"No other campaign has done this before," campaign manager David Plouffe said in the e-mail. "You can be part of this important moment."

To be on the distribution list, one only has to text the message “VP” to the Obama SMS short code number, 62262 (conveniently OBAMA on a phone keypad). The campaign also lets people sign up for an email alert on its website as well as receive notice through Twitter.

The Obama Twitter group currently has 56,210 followers. The Twitter announcement reads:

Announcing the VP candidate sometime between now & the Convention by txt msg & email. Text VP to 62262 or visit http://my.barackobama.com/vp

Obama has used the Internet to build a network of 2 million volunteers and raise nearly $340 million, as of the end of June. All the main online networking sites have been covered with Obama activity including Flickr, LinkedIn, MySpace, Facebook and YouTube.

Mobile Obama

There is a section on Obama’s campaign website called Obama Mobile, where supporters can download ringtones that include his voice with messages such as 'Go! Go! Obama', 'America, it is time to start bringing our troops home', and 'This is Barack Obama, it's time to change America - Answer the call.'

A small selection of phone wallpapers feature the candidate's face or campaign logo. There are regular text updates on offer with news on topics such as healthcare, jobs, education or the war in Iraq. And for those that want them all, just send the word “hope” to Obama’s short code.
