Operators: Maldives SMS Call Me Back service

Submitted by Mike Grenville on Mon, 04 Sep 2006 14:40

Prepaid customers who run out of credit in the Maldives can send a "Call Me Back" SMS to any national mobile number, one of several SMS services the company has introduced recently.

The "Call Me Back" service is the latest in a series of initiatives taken by mobile operator Dhiraagu. Recently Dhiraagu has introduced Quick Top-up service where credit can be transferred from one Dhiraagu prepaid to another via SMS, and Quick recharge service where Dhiraagu prepaid mobiles can be recharged by sending credit from a postpaid via SMS.

With Quick Top Up, any amount between Rf1 and Rf500 in Rf1 increments can be transferred between Dhiraagu prepaid accounts. A regular monthly transfer can be set up where customers select a specific date of the month for credit to be transferred.

Out of Office

A feature that has been added to the Missed Call Alert Service is Out of Office. With it customers can arrange to have a personalised SMS sent automatically to anyone who used their mobile phone to call while the phone was switched off or were outside the network coverage area. The personalised SMS can be used to inform callers why you are not available and/or when you expect to be available in the same way as can be done with many email services.

Users can choose to have the personalised SMS message sent either to all callers, or only to a predefined list of callers. Out of Office is available FREE of charge to postpaid customers.

With Muslim daily prayer times varying depending on sunrise and sunset, a SMS Prayer Time Enquiry service gives all the times for the day ahead. An example of the resulting SMS is:

Prayer times for 14/05/2003 are Fajru (Fathis) 5.15, Shurook(Iru ara) 6.01, Luhur(Mendhuru) 12.15, Asru 3.17, Maqrib 6.16, Isha 7.17 - Dhiraagu

Other services offered by the operator is a SMS telephone Directory Enquiry Service to check the name and address of the registered owner of a phone number and a SMS Mobile Bill Enquiry for Post-Paid customers to check their outstanding and unbilled charges.

The Dhiraagu network covers 106 inhabited islands and 88 resorts in 20 atolls across the Maldives. GSM mobile coverage available to 73% of the population of about 359,000, with 1 mobile phone per 3 of the adult population - a figure they claim as the highest in South Asia.
