In the week that most of BA flights have been grounded with an industrial dispute, an SMS flight delay service covering most UK major airports has been launched
Nearly every major UK airport is covered by the service, which constantly monitors both arriving and departing flight data every minute of the day using the airport
Flight details can be registered via the website or if the flight is arriving or departing on the current day, by simply texting FLIGHT, followed by the flight number and airport code to 63344, will begin the alert service. Each message costs 50p plus normal text charges
Taxi firms are offered a discounted rate per flight invoiced directly eliminating any individual mobile user being billed.
Browne & Mortimer who have developed the service worked with SendMyTxt Ltd for the SMS solution. The service was integrated with ease and the help from SendMyTxt meant that the SMS service was up and running within 48 hours. The service is planned to be launched before the end of September in the U.S.A. using SendMyTxt as their SMS partner.
Other Services
AirText Ltd SMS flight tracker service has been running in the UK since October 2003 covering 24 airports in the UK, both arrivals and departures. They provide Sky's only flight information on Sky Text p767 and partner Thomson and MyTravelLite.
The service costs £1.50 in total for simple Arrivals or Departures and entails a series (usually around 5) of live updates about the requested flight. They also operate a mobile originated service on 80039 - simply text 'AirText' followed by the flight number to order
Airport authority BAA has their own service Flying Messenger developed with WIN that covers only Heathrow and Gatwick so far with plans to roll out the service at other BAA airports "in due course". The BAA service already has 10,000 users per month and costs 30p per message.
