Operators: T-Mobile launches Street gigs

Submitted by Mike Grenville on Thu, 21 Jul 2005 16:59

London and Birmingham is to have a series of a series of street gigs this summer organised by T-mobile with the invites going out by SMS only a couple of hours beforehand.

The text and picture message invitations are being sent only 90 minutes before the acts play with details of the secret gig location. Wannabee gig goers can also sign-up online to register their interest at www.t-mobile.co.uk/street.

The whole event, including set up and take down, will last just two hours, demonstrating the ‘blink-and-you’ll-miss-it’ nature of Street Gigs.

"The performances aren’t concerts or PA’s" said a T-mobile spokesperson "but totally live sets from fresh new talent including Mercury music prize nominated The Magic Numbers plus Lemar, The Subways, Estelle and other to be announced, all staged in urban locations in the open to offer fans a totally one-off experience and unique electric atmosphere."

Each of the 25 gigs is being filmed for broadcast online and run until mid September.

Cameraphone Trials

T-Mobile will use the events to promote the new Sony Ericsson D750i camera phone, an exclusive model only available on the T-Mobile network.

The handset has a 2 mega-pixel camera, auto-focus and camera light and will be made available for the crowd to take their own creative shots and through the T-Mobile Kodak Mobile Service customers will be able to print out digital quality photographs on site to keep.

Timing Is Everything

With what could at best be described as unfortunate timing, the press release said that "IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE STREETS TODAY YOU’RE SURE OF A BIG SURPRISE". In the circumstances, the launch event tonight with The Magic Numbers has been cancelled "due to today’s activity in Central London." The police have appealed for witnesses with mobile phone pictures of any of the incidents to visit the www.police.uk website. Hopefully the next street surprises will be pleasant ones.
