Summary This our second events looking at mobile and NGOs will consider the security measures that they should consider in their use of mobile phones. The aim of the event is to increase their awareness of the capabilities of mobile phones, networks and to help them develop a mobile phone policy.

This is a half day afternoon event 14.00 - 18.00

Ian Brown Dr. Ian Brown FRSA FBCS CITP will talk about the UK government powers to access information.

Dr Brown's main professional interests are in public policy issues around information and the Internet, as well as the more technical fields of information security. He is a senior research manager at the Communications Research Network and a senior research fellow at University College London. As well as teaching a range of computer science courses at UCL, he is an adviser to a number of NGOs, research projects and companies.

He is treasurer of Privacy International and the Open Rights Group, and on the advisory council of the Foundation for Information Policy Research. The NOP have named him as one of the 100 most influential people in the development of the Internet in the UK over the last ten years.

Mike Hawkes has considerable experience of data transmission technologies, mobile telecommunications and data security systems. Working with international governments, police agencies and standards bodies, he has contributed to the development of international legislation along with consumer protection and advertising standards. Defining how technologies can support honest, decent and truthful trading is key to ensuring that consumers have a good experience and promotes the development of secure data services.

Mike has written many press articles, co-authored two books, produced and presented television and radio programmes and developed the worlds first full-broadcast specification video transmission systems for use on the Internet. As an inventor of numerous security systems for on-line and mobile use, he is currently the Director of Research and Development for 2safeguard: a new secure communications protocol.

He is also M-Commerce Director for the Mobile Data Association.


Mike Grenville Mike Grenville from 160 Characters will provide an overview of the information on mobile phones and network capabilities.

As well as running 160 Characters and writing extensively about mobile messaging, he is also an active participant in a number of NGOs with particular interest in human rights and environmental issues.
